Redeemer Review
The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer
A caring community offering opportunities for spiritual growth
by knowing, loving and serving God through each other
July/August, 2005
FROM THE VICAR
It’s summer! We can finally relax! Therefore, my main message to you is short and lighthearted: spend this
wonderful light filled time between now and Labor Day looking for good news! Jesus came that we might have life
and have it abundantly and what better time than summer, when the fish are jumpin’ and the weeds are brilliant in
the sun, to practice being the light of the world.
Our readings for the summer months take up the themes of discipleship and how to look for that wonderful
Kingdom that Jesus could see and we so often cannot. “It is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher,” says
Jesus in one of the readings. “So have no fear.” We are called to be like Jesus: healers, friends, people who are
present to one another in love. No matter how confusing, strange, soulless or politically incorrect the world out
there might appear, Jesus teaches that there’s always more hope than fear.  We just have to find it. Summer
vacations, when we are literally on the journey, are perfect times to go good news hunting. Vacation comes from a
word meaning “to empty.” When we are empty of our own cares is when God is best able to fill us. Sometimes,
especially when we travel in poor countries, their beauty is tempered by sadness, disease and environmental
degradation, but God meant us to see that, too. How can we ever heal that which we have not seen, known and
loved? Our soon to be Seminarian Janet Fullmer’s life was changed when she took a trip to Haiti. At Redeemer we
are looking for ways to bring hope and life to AIDS children in Africa.
In other news, it was a wonderful moment for me when a man came up to me at the Pancake Breakfast and
asked how many more summer events Redeemer was hosting for the neighbors. Isn’t that what being a community
church is all about? We’ll be doing quite a few. July 16th is the annual Glenwood Homeowners’ Association Picnic.
It’s a great occasion to enjoy good food and company and spread our infectious good cheer among our neighbors.
Summernista Sundays at 9:15 will emphasize fun. During August, every Friday from July 29
th
through August 26
(except for August 5th
when we’ll be recovering from all the spells cast at Camp Hogwarts) we’ll open our doors for
Floating Family Friday Flix Nite when friends and neighbors are invited to drop by for a film, food and fun. And
of course our VBS Spectacular Camp Hogwarts is open to all children entering K to entering Grade 6. We’ll end the
summer with our camping trip up in the Gold Country near the American River to celebrate the real gold in
California, which is all of you!
Be blessed, my friends. We’ll be praying for you when you travel and we can’t wait to hear your stories
when you return. If you remember, send us a postcard and I’ll do a “The Places We’ve Been” collage around the
door.
SEND US A CARD. . . and let us know where you are!
Blessings,
