SPEAKING OF ACOLYTES
We may not have been deep into this conversation the
last time we spoke; however, this is a subject dear to
my heart. Acolytes are those young and indispensable
members of the Sunday Altar Party. For those of
you to whom this is a new term, the Altar Party
refers to those people who serve at the altar during a
service. These are the people who set the tone for
our celebration of the Eucharist. Each person who is
at the altar during Eucharist has a very specific job
that is reserved just for that person. Most who are
there also had a party in the Liturgy of the Word.
We know, of course, that the Priest is the only one
who can consecrate the elements for the Eucharist.
The Deacon sets and clears the table, elevates the
chalice at the proper time, and administers the
chalice. The Eucharistic Minister turns the pages for
the Priest and also administers the chalice. The
Acolytes keep everything moving smoothly! They
receive the oblations (the bread and wine) to give to
the Deacon. They receive the offering to give to the
Priest. They wash the Priests hands, and they help
clear the table.
None of what you see at the altar would run so
smoothly without each person there doing his or her
job! Our acolytes are wonderful in their service! We
have had most kids in church serve at some time while
being members.
Please notice that is time again to train new acolytes.
Watch how quickly they become as skilled as those
they are joining. Being Acolyte Mom is truly a
privilege for me.
