FROM THE VICAR
A Little Lint on the Subject of Lent
Forget everything you’ve ever heard about Lent. It’s not what you think. Far from being a rigorous 40 days
of self improvement, of giving up the cherished comforts of chocolate, gin, coffee or ice cream, taking off those
extra 10 pounds and finally getting our act together, it’s in fact quite the opposite. Lent is a time not of blessed
self-forgetting, of getting off the treadmill of self-improvement and cultivating, not the preoccupations of the
daily grind, but the life of the Spirit. Lent calls us to pray more intentionally, to reflect upon the great questions of
life, to check in for a retreat at that interesting destination called the Kingdom of God. Like a summer vacation,
Lent is the gift of a finite space of time in which to try new ways of living the same old life a little more freely. But
unlike a summer vacation which comes crashing to an end our first day back at the office, Lent ends not with a
return to what was before, but with New Life in Easter. To help you along the way, we’re going to offer a number
of opportunities for spiritual practice and discernment during this year’s great 40 days. Every Wednesday morning,
beginning with Ash Wednesday on February 9th, Redeemer will be open for Commuter Communion at 6:30. We will
share the Eucharist and pray for each other.
Every Wednesday evening in Lent, beginning February 16th, Women’s Spirituality will host a series called
“Mining the Treasures of the Spirit,” between 7 and 8:30. Here we will share refreshment and explore with the aid
of outside speakers what the spiritual life is all about and how to recognize its riches.
join in a spiritual conversation from the comfort of your computer.
Our children, too, will be invited to spiritual reflection. Tuesday afternoons during Lent will explore the
magic of Moses, Pharaoh and the Exodus from Egypt. This has more to do with Harry Potter than you might think!
I look forward to being your companion on this wonderful journey.
Blessings,
Rev. Carol Luther
