Saving the World one Step at a Time:
MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS
At the start of the new millennium, leaders from 191
nations, including the United States, agreed on a
plan to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015.
Together, they created the eight Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs):
Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education for
Children
Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower
Women
Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality
Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other
Diseases
Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability
Goal 8: Create a Global Partnership for
Development
AND NOW VIDEO GAMES CAN HELP SAVE
THE WORLD TOO!
Perhaps you have already read about how video
games are creating communities of cooperation.
Now you can participate in one. To help people
young and old better understand what is happening
in our world, the United Nations has created Food
Force, a computer game about world hunger. You
can download it for free at:
Food Force takes players on a journey of what is
involved in bringing emergency food supplies to an
island threatened by ecological collapse and civil
war. Hunger is rarely caused by crop failure alone,
but is aided by political unrest and unjust distri-
bution systems. For instance, India, a poor country,
but a very democratic one, has never had a famine.
